MILK POWDER (INFANT FORMULA) |
HISTORY:
The technology that currently
produces the highly regulated infant formula that millions of infants are fed
today was not always available. From human existence, not all mothers of
infants were able to breastfeed, and had to have a Wet-Nurse feed the baby.
At the time of the first
pediatric hospital in paris in 1802, Nonbreast-Fed infants were fed directly
from the udder of cows, goats, or donkeys. It was found that infants were fed
the donkey milk fared better than those fed cows or goats because of the milk
protein content that was similar to breast milk.
In 1907, president
Roosevelt directed the surgeon general of the public health and marine hospital
service to investigate the milk supply in the district of Columbia areas. This
was a result of the alarming increase of infant mortality due to the decline in
breast feeding and the unsafe use of cow milk as a substitute.
Finally, the currently
strict regulations of infant formula are the result of infant formula act of
1980. The infant formula act was developed to regulate the formula at high
standards.
